Sailing to Boot Key, Marathon

We have several hundred miles to get to our final destination in Georgia.  We are not sure exactly where in Georgia, but we’ve decided we are going to get the boat hauled in Brunswick or Savannah.  So we continued our journey north.  The next stop was Marathon Key, just under 45 miles from Key West, and pretty much a full day of sailing.

We fueled up in the morning  and headed out of Key West to the Atlantic Ocean seven miles away and put out our sails.  Motor off!  Woot!

Sailing to Marathon was nice, especially after the 500-mile motor from Cayman to Key West.  We only used the motor for a couple of hours to exit and enter the harbors.  At Marathon, we motored a ways into the huge lagoon and found our assigned mooring ball in the 270-boat city marina.  Whoa.  Huge!  We’re not in Panama anymore!  And with our mooring attached, we called it quits for the night.

After a good night’s sleep, we took the dinghy to the marina office.  We were impressed at the two huge dinghy docks, the building full of restrooms, and the other amenities we got a peek of before the office opened.  We were too early to go to the office, so we wandered off to get breakfast and go shopping at the Publix just over a mile up the road.

With a backpack full of groceries, we returned to the marina to pay our mooring fee.  Once inside, our jaws dropped at all of the facilities they offer to their guests.  There was a big project room, a huge lending library, bike for the borrowing, a couple of private movie rooms, a kid zone, a large laundry facility,  an outdoor picnic area, and so much more.  We probably should have stayed an extra night to check out the community.  But no, we had to continue north!  We needed to get the boat hauled in Georgia. Repairs await!
