Tamarindo, CR stopover

We motorsailed from Marina Papagayo to Bahía Tamarindo.  ww have no intent to visit the beach – just a rest stop before heading into the wild side of the Costa Rican coast. We are trying to minimize overnight sails in Costa Rica and Panamá. We also have a January 9 date to go through the canal, but we think we have enough time to make this a leisurely trek.

We followed charts as closely as possible as there are a number of reefs and rocks to avoid. Winds were registering 20+ knots on approach but lightened by a few knots as we neared the anchorage.

Tamarindo is described as a tourist destination on steroids – definately not Las Vegas, but there were horseback rides on the beach, palapa restaurants scattered about, surfers waiting for the perfect wave, and music pounding from the jungle (until at least 4:30 AM).

We’ve entered the surfer zone. Sailors with dinghies don’t really enjoy landing at surf beaches – it’s usually a wet event. Dinghies don’t surf well.

  1. So glad you have your date to get through the canal. I am excited for you both. You have done an amazing job. I’m sure there are some lonely moments when you miss family and friends. But you guys are out there doing it so proud of you both. I always send your emails to Ian and Roland cuz I know both of them wish they could be there with you. We are well and experiencing the first season with the darkness and rain. So far we are actually enjoying it. Take care love you both. Will you make a trip to see Dave’s folks before you head through the canal? Love Denise

    1. We won’t be back to the States until some time after our canal transit – probably in time for tax season. We have not really finalized any plans for post-transit destinations.

      Glad you are enjoying the change in climate from Reno. It would be a nice change for us too. Here it’s hot and humid every day with a welcome relief overnight.
