Playas del Coco, CR

Anchored with lots of other boats

The little town of Coco was our next stop and our official port of entry into Costa Rica. We were anchored out in the bay with probably 80 other boats, mostly fishing boats but a few cruisers mixed in.

Check-in to Costa Rica requried some effort. In Nicaragua, all the officials came from Corinto, NI to the marina, more than an hour by taxi, for check-in. In Costa Rica, we had to track down the officials. The port captain was easy – just a block off the beach. Immigration was listed on Google about six blocks to the left of their actual location. Argh. Customs I is at the airport in Liberia, so a cab ride was required. It took about four hours to get checked in.

We locked up the dinghy on the beach while we did the check-in – there were reports of dinghy thefts – we saw nothing of the sort. The town is a gringo beach getaway. At least half the people we saw were speaking native English.

After check-in was complete, it was time for lunch. Mary, the social butterfly, chatted with a family that was buying a beachfront lot for their new house. They bought us a couple of adult beverages in exchange for sea stories.

The port captain told us to get out and away to our next destination by 8AM. We did. It would have been nice to have done a little provisioning before raising the anchor.

It’s only six miles to sail to Marina Papagayo!
