We took a flight from Lima (altitude 0) to Cusco (altitude 11,000+) on our way to Machu Picchu. We’ve been living at sea level for a couple years now, so altitude sickness was very much on our minds. They have candy and tea to help with that… coca leaves anyone?

Our drive out of Cusco to our hotel in The Sacred Valley took us to over 12,000 feet. Our hotel in Urubamba was way lower, but still nearly 9500 feet. Hydration is important to prevent altitude sickness, too. We sipped a couple liters of water on the drive.

Guinea pigs right? I was told ancient people would travel with them as a food source. Glad you didn’t need the oxygen.
