Shelter Bay Marina to Providencia

After clearing out with Panama Immigration on Monday, April 22, we headed to Portobello so we could anchor for a couple of hours and clean the bottom of the boat. We found a small anchorage a bit closer, Isla Naranjo Abajo. We pulled in there, and Dave and Ken did an awesome job getting rid of all the little critters growing on the bottom. Around 3 PM, we pulled anchor and headed to Providencia, Colombia.

Around sunset, we made it out of the shipping lanes and sailed the rest of the way to Providencia.  We sailed all night, although it was not very comfortable sleeping. We ran 3-hour shifts and overlapped an hour on each end of the shift.  Everyone got to spend the first and last hour of the shift with someone to talk to and the middle hour of the shift alone.   It worked out pretty well.  Everyone got a longer sleep between shifts.

We arrived in the anchorage at Providencia and headed to town.  First order of business was to get cleared into Colombia.  An agent is required for check-in, and it took about 90 minutes to meet with the officials.  Then, the passports went away with Immigration.  The actual check-in finished at 6:30pm when our passports were finally returned.  Whew.

We spent the day with a couple of rented scooters exploring the island while passports were exploring elsewhere.  The plan was to leave the next morning.

The morning of day two at Providencia, we started sailing to Grand Cayman.  Unfortunately the winds and waves had other plans for us, so we headed back to the Providencia anchorage after a few hour of bashing.  A quick snorkle cooled us down, and after dinner, it was time for sleep.

We decided that the weather the following day would be no better,  so the new plan was to go to San Andrés so the crew could fly back after a couple days of relaxation.  Grand Cayman was lost…
