Final Days in Lima

The Gate 1 tour ended on Sunday. We booked a couple extra nights in Lima just to relax, recover, and take in a few more experiences before leaving South America.

Day 1 – Last day of the official tour. We flew into Lima the morning. The air is much more dense at sea level. Our lungs appreciated the extra oxygen. We had lunch with a foursome from our tour who were full of stories.

We had our farewell diner with the rest of our Peru tour family, and then we were on our own. Early to bed to really get altitude recovery underway.

We booked two extra nights, which, since we flew out just before midnight, meant we had three more days in Lima. Probably a day longer than we needed.

Day 2. We explored around Mira Flores. Over 27,000 steps per the pedometer. We finished the evening dinner with another couple who also extended their stay by a couple of days. And early to bed again. More intensive recovery was required. We were also fighting off some congestion.

Day 3. We took a stroll to the Barranco neighborhood, famous for its bohemian vibe. Only 18000 steps today. Taking it easy, I guess.

Day 4. We had to be at the airport around 8 pm for our very late overnight flight to Miami. We ended up trying to take a bus downtown. The bus ran true for 10 minutes, then it turned in an unexpected direction, so we jumped off and walked a mile to our first destination.

After our bus misadventure, we called an Uber to get us to the Central Plaza painlessly. Lima Central felt a lot like Mexico City.

We did succeed in getting on the right bus to get back to our hotel. 45 minutes. Lima bus drivers are insane! We did not run over any pedestrians, bicycles, or other vehicles. Whew.

Our last leg – to the airport for our midnight flight out of town. Highly recommend NEVER drive yourself anywhere in Lima. You will not survive!
