Fort McAllister State Park, Savannah, GA

Our next stop in Georgia was just a few miles south of Savannah.  It’s a beautiful city.  We braved the impressive humidity and toured around the area, including taking a site-seeing riverboat tour.

We took an excursion to Old Fort Jackson.  The guide made this the best fort tour ever.  After a great presentation by the guide, we were treated to musket and canon fire demonstrations.  And since we were camping at Fort McAllister,  we did take a self-guided tour there, too.

Another excursion took us to Tybee Island looking for a beach and some relief from the heat and humidity.  Temperatures were in the high 80’s with a heat index often above 110.  Dave was having so much fun in the water that he made a trip to Urgent Care the next morning for shoulder x-rays…

Unfortunately, we also found out this was well within the boundaries of the infamous Gnat Line.  We were quite motivated to leave McAllister behind after several nights of fighting gnats.

We killed some no-see-ums.  See them?No dent made in the gnat population.
