Fort Hamby COE Park, NC

We crossed into North Carolina after paying exorbitant tolls on our way out of West Virginia. Fort Hamby park is on a small reservoir just outside of Wilkesboro, NC. Our first night at the campsite reminded us to check the weather once in a while. We experienced our first tornado warning around 2AM on our first night at camp. Welcome to North Carolina!

Having survived our tornado warning, brief high winds, and torrential rains, we used Fort Hamby as a base to explore some local sites. We drove part of the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway thru Boone (home of the Appalachian State University Mountaineers, and apparently Daniel Boone), Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, and other little towns and parks. Lots of hard-rock waterfalls!
